The roller-coaster ride begins with the text message from my long lost friend Rina in Laying Ghosts. After that, weird messages seem to haunt me throughout the series – in dreams, from fortune cookies … 

 

It’s a fortune cookie that gives me the courage to act on what happens in Laying Ghosts.

 

Now I keep a jar of fortune cookies on my desk, just in case of emergencies. They’re as near as I get to soothsaying and their guidance suits my style. Enigmatic. They don’t tell me what to do, they propose a cryptic clue and invite me to make my own decision.
